Wise Up With Gentri

Last year we announced our new mission to strengthen America with three easy steps: wise up, suit up, and speak up.

Our first content related to this mission was an interview with Gentri, the best dressed music group on the planet. Check out more about their custom made suits on a related Vlog episode

Today, we're breaking off a chunk of that interview to highlight a portion of our missions: Wise Up.

Wisdom is the quality of having common sense, good judgement, and experience.

Wisdom is different then knowledge. My favorite way to illustrate this is the saying, "knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit, wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad."

In other words, it doesn't matter how smart you are if your actions don't result in success for you or those around you.

We, as a society, continue to get smarter and smarter while at the same time, it seems, we're becoming more and more unwise.

Take, for instance, the principles that made America the most powerful and good nation in the world. You'd think that the smarter we get, the more we'd understand the importance of American values like hard work, equal opportunity, free market, service, freedom of speech, the sanctity of life, and others.

"Wise Up" is our call to learn the principles of building successful lives, families, communities, and nations.

Over the next months and years we'll be meeting with people who are wise, well dressed, and ambitious for good. We'll ask them their thoughts on wising up and hope to gain a little wisdom ourselves.

Such was the case with Gentri. Check out what they think it means to wise up.

Last Hope Project

About a month ago I had an epiphany that will change MyNiceTie forever.

Since its inception, MyNiceTie has been working to help bring people out of poverty and improve the world one necktie at a time. We've done a lot of good, but I've been looking for a way to improve our mission and vision, one that would fit well with our products and our videos.

I've considered many ideas. Maybe we build a brand around vintage style and try to bring neckties back into vogue. Maybe we branch out with different types of videos on YouTube like pranks, reveals, vlogs, etc. Maybe we try to be a hub of ties for other less tech savvy sellers. Yet none of them felt like a good fit for our product or our mission to improve the world.

Then, I found it, the idea that will focus the company for years to come. I'd like to say I came up with this idea myself, but it is truly an epiphany in the real sense of the word. The following is my attempt to formalize the idea.

The Symbolism

Neckties remain, even today, the iconic symbol of leadership, and a necessary part of the uniform of the most powerful people in the world. They are a part of our most cherish moments, like marriage, graduation, and other formal events; they even join us with our grief.

That said, there is no doubt that neckties are being worn less at school, less at work, less in meetings, and less in everyday life. Heck, people used to dress up to go to the store, fly on an airplane, or even go to the movies. Now, looking your best is out of place in most places.

This casualness in our dress is mirrored by a casualness in our society: casualness in relationships, speech, morals, and values. I don't understand why this happened, but I do see that the fruit of these changes are not good. They've left America a divided and vulgar shadow of its former glory.

Amazingly, I'm seeing a rising tide of a very wise group of young people who believe wholeheartedly in the fundamental values that made us what and who we were.Their eyes are opening to the fact that if we don't stand up we may pay up by loosing what Abraham Lincoln called the "last best hope of Earth", America.

Values of America

Don't be mistaken, our initiative isn't about America per se, it's about the core values that America was founded on. These values have helped America become the most powerful country in the world, but more importantly, the most generous. These values have pulled countless people out of poverty. These values have brought equality and liberty like never before known in history. This initiative is about values.

So, what values are we talking about? To tell you the truth, I don't know yet. Although I've been interested in this topic for some time, I've never studied it thoroughly. Some seem obvious like hard work, free markets, equality of opportunity, honesty, but I have a lot to learn. I'll be looking to "wise up" and I'm inviting you along for the journey.

What I do know is that America is at a crossroads and the world is looking to us to stand up and reassert these values so that this great experiment may be continued uninterrupted by the current chaos we see in our capital city and on the coasts.

Next Steps

I admit, this may seem like an unusual blog post for a necktie company, and it is, but MyNiceTie's biggest goal has always been to improve the world and this path will allow us to make a greater difference than ever imagined.

We still have a lot to figure out, but the idea is to use this blog, our YouTube channel, future necktie designs, and every resource of the company to accomplish this goal and hopefully fund this effort through sales and sponsorship.

We're going to need your help in this cause. Reach out, let us know what you think and let us know the values you think are important.

Our plan going forward can be summed up in the following call to action: wise up, suit up, speak up.

Wise Up

I've already begun to study. My goal is to first learn and understand the values and principles that lead to happy, successful, and peaceful societies; in other words, I'm starting with wisdom.

For me, wisdom represents a type of knowledge that doesn't change based on the whims of society; it is as likely to be true today as it was a thousand years ago and as it will be true a thousand years into the future.

I'm struck by how wisdom is often counter intuitive until you're taught it (by someone wise, by an expert, or by scientific exploration) and then it just rings true, it strikes a chord with common sense, and it leaves an indelible impression on your mind. The study of economics during my undergrad was like this for me. Until you see the data, charts, and graphs, you often draw incorrect conclusions but when you see the studies in connection with the theory, your instinct pales to your newfound knowledge.

You may have noticed the word "true" in the previous two paragraphs. It seems that the concept of wisdom is also inseparably connected with truth. But it is a little bit more than truth, it is applied truth. You can't just know something, you have to apply it in a helpful way.

So with that in mind, I'm looking to wise up and I'm inviting you to join me. In fact, I need your help! Study the values and principle that made America great and share what you learn. Also, if you know any experts in related subjects, I'd love to meet them and make a video with them.

Suit Up

There is a reason that almost every group of consequence in history has a uniform. Just ask anyone in the military how powerful their uniform is and its importance.

Not only that, but have you ever considered the uniform of almost all those in power? Leaders of communities, companies, and nations all wear the familiar dark suit (and tie if male).

For us, the necktie is not only a symbol of our goal, but also a means to promote it. To this end, we'll be coming out with value themed necktie designs that interconnect our product with the values we're trying to promote.

Each value will have a related symbol and colors that inspire the new designs. Wearing the uniform of our cause and wearing our new designs/symbols will be a powerful way you can help to increase the reach of our message.

Speak Up

Once we know the values and are dressed for success, we just need to start moving our legs. We'll need to look for opportunities to spread these values.

Now, more than ever, we cannot be silently content.

I attended one of the most far left schools in the county (University of Colorado at Boulder) smack dab in the middle of the presidential election between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.

For several reasons, which I won't outline here, I was a vocal supporter of Mitt and at one point I even had a classmate (who I still respect) chide me saying that business people are supposed to help both parties and therefore benefit regardless of who is in power.

I'll admit that since then I've considered his advice many times, and I just can't see the wisdom in it. It may lead to short-term gain, but it will cost us in the long run. I've seen how our collective silence has led us to this cross roads and I'm convinced the only way to straighten the ship is to engage in the conversation in a respectful way.

Our plan to speak up is to make videos and film interviews related to the value that we're focusing on. These videos will not be cheap, but we're hoping that the content will extend our reach and increase the usefulness of what we're already producing.

We want to contribute to the conversation and spark more if possible. Our goal is to increase the discussion. I know that drawing a line in the sand and standing up may make us a target for those who disagree with our values, but that is a risk I'm willing to take.

You can speak up by joining the conversation and by looking for ways you can use your unique talents, gifts, and resources to stand up as well.

Conclusion

I don't know that I've ever been more excited for the future of MyNiceTie. I also don't know if its future has ever been more uncertain, but what I do know is that however this ends, it is going to be quite an interesting ride.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, friends! We here at MyNiceTie are so excited for the holiday season and what the new year will bring. We are working on new tie designs, discount programs, and even some rebranding to revamp our image and better showcase our values.

In the meantime, we are still publishing how-to videos and looking snazzy. Have you seen our two newest videos? They feature the Double Windsor and Nicky Knot - two classy knots that would look fantastic at Church, Christmas dinner with the family, or even your company holiday party.

Speaking of looking snazzy, my favorite Christmas tie is our Red Dotted Zipper tie. Not only is it festive, but it’s a zipper tie so you can save time tieing and get back to the festivities! It also comes in kids sizes so you can match with your favorite little dude or dudette in all those family photos. If you’re looking for a more sophisticated tie, our Holiday Bliss tie may be more your style. Regardless of which tie you opt for, don’t forget to use our discount code THANKFUL18 which is good until the end of the year!

We will be spending the holidays surrounded by our family and reflecting on the fantastic year we have had and praying for continued opportunities to help those who need it most through KIVA. You may recall we told you a little bit about KIVA in our last newsletter, but we are so honored to work with them, we like to give them shoutouts when we can. If you’re feeling especially generous, you can buy a tie or donate directly by giving a KIVA card!

It’s been a wonderfully productive year here at MyNiceTie. We truly feel grateful for the opportunities we have to make a positive difference doing what we love. We are blessed and hope to have a bigger impact on the world with the years to come. We are excited about this journey and the next big chapter at MyNiceTie. We pray you’ll continue to join us and be part of our story.

God bless you and yours,

Ben

Happy Thanksgiving!

The holidays are upon us and it’s my favorite time of year. Thanksgiving is right around the corner and we have lots to be thankful for here at MyNiceTie.com. As you may have read in previous newsletters, we donate 20% of every sale to Kiva, a nonprofit that provides entrepreneurs in developing countries with little to zero interest loans to help make dreams come true.

To date, we have funded almost $19,000 in loans. These businesses have ranged from water sanitation services, construction, and small businesses that provide goods in rural villages.

None of this would have been possible without you and your support, so we give you a heartfelt thank you! We also would like to give a discount code for the rest of the year for 15% off your entire purchase! Just use the code THANKFUL18 and feel free to share with friends and family.

Speaking of friends and family, I am getting pretty pumped for Thanksgiving dinner. Nothing says Thanksgiving like one of my most cherished childhood memories - my mom’s fruit salad. Mmmm. I’ve included a recipe below for your own indulgence. I know it isn’t fancy or gourmet, but it is definitely love on a plate at my house.

Mom’s Fruit Salad

Ingredients

  • Two cans of fruit salad. You can be fancy and cut up your own fruit concoction, but it’s just not the same.
  • A container of whipped cream, the tub works better than the can. Again, you can channel your inner pastry chef and whip up your own, but that’s not how mom made it!
  • A bag of mini marshmallows.

Instructions

  • Drain your fruit salad. Or chop it up and make it yourself if you’re trying to show off.
  • Mix in your whipped topping
  • Add surviving mini marshmallows and gently fold in
  • Instant Thanksgiving!

Here’s another Thanksgiving tip for you, if you tuck a collared shirt into sweatpants, no one can tell when you’re seated and you can eat twice as much fruit salad. Don’t forget the tie!

We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving full of love and food and surrounded by the people who make you feel the most genuine gratitude.

Happy Halloween!

Fall is in full swing here at Mynicetie.com! We’ve been busy designing new ties and publishing new how-to videos, but that doesn’t mean we don’t know how to have fun too! We are ramping up for Halloween and would love to help you figure out your costume - below is a list of our top 10 favorite costumes that feature a neck or bow tie!

  1. Superman - Not just any Superman, but the mid-transformation version where Clark Kent is in the midst of pulling back his office attire and revealing the hidden “S” on his superhero garb. This costume only requires a simple business casual ensemble with tie and a button down shirt. Make sure your Superman shirt is easily visible by keeping the shirt unbuttoned and tie loosened.
  2. Man in the Yellow Hat - This costume is perfect for anyone whose partner or child is dressing up as a curious monkey! We have no idea where you’ll get your yellow hat and yellow suit, but this necktie may work!
  3. James Bond - This one is easy and a great excuse to dress up in your nicest suit. You can use a necktie or a bowtie for this costume and you can opt for the debonair tuxedo wearing version of our favorite spy, or the secret agent black suit. Either way, I’m sure anything here would be perfect!
  4. Harry Potter - Have you always wished you received your letter to Hogwarts? Then you should consider dressing up as Gryffindor’s most famous member! Easy to do with a white shirt, cape, and striped tie in house colors! Don’t forget your round glasses and forehead lightning bolt!
  5. Fred Flintstone - This one is easy! All you need is a saber tooth tiger tunic and a blue necktie!
  6. Bill Nye the Science Guy - This costume is as easy as they come. All you need is a blue lab coat, a white button up, and any bow tie - boom - instant scientist!
  7. Zombie - Of all the costumes, this is my favorite. Just take any business casual garb you no longer like (or fit into), and fray the edges, make it dirty, and splatter on some fake blood. You can use any necktie to finish your “former businessman, now undead” look! Remember to keep it somewhat loose and dangling from the neck!
  8. Vampire - Do you have black pants, and white collared shirt, fangs, and fake blood? All you’re missing is the red tie and swanky cape and you’ve got yourself a vampire.
  9. Doctor - Similar to the scientist costume above, this one requires a white lab coat and really any necktie.
  10. Mary Poppins - This one is just for the ladies! Complete your look with a black or red bow tie.

Regardless of how you celebrate and what you dress up as, we here at Mynicetie.com hope you do so safely and with a responsible amount of candy. We are celebrating by offering a 10% discount all of our tie for the remainder of the month - just use the code SPOOKY18 at checkout.

Want to show off your necktie inspired ensemble? Send us a photo (Service@mynicetie.com) and you may just win something!
