July Newsletter - Ties & Dogs

Ah, Summer. July brings one of my favorite times of year; the smells of barbeques, the sounds of kids splashing in the pool, and the plethora of flavors that all resonate summer. With another successful Independence Day under our belt, I thought we could celebrate another July holiday a little early: July 19th - National Hotdog Day.

A lot like America, the hotdog is reminiscent of opportunity: toppings and cookings styles are endless and even kids can make them. Whether you bake, grill, or even microwave these symbols of summer, they’re delicious, versatile, and widely available.
To celebrate this important pastime and cornerstone of American history we are sharing some fun hot dog facts, and some of our favorite weiner recipes.

  • On a good day, I can eat three hot dogs if I don’t go crazy on the toppings. In 2017, competitive eater Joey “Jaws” Chestnut, downed 72 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes!
  • The world’s most expensive hot dog can be purchased for a cool $169 at Seattle’s food truck, Tokyo Dog. The footlong masterpiece is topped with Teriyaki grilled onions, Maitake mushrooms, Wagyu beef, foie gras, shaved black truffles, caviar and Japanese mayonnaise! I think I still prefer just mustard on mine.
  • The most popular hot dog topping in the United States is mustard, followed by ketchup, and chili takes third place.
  • According to the National Sausage and Hot Dog Council, 7 billion hot dogs eaten between Memorial Day and Labor Day. 150 million of those will be consumed during the Fourth of July holiday!

Remember that no matter how you top these delectable treats, if you’re grilling them, you should use tongs or you’ll lose those tasty juices if pierced with a fork!

Jalapeno Popper Hot Dogs (or as I call them “Hot Diggity Dogs”)
Ingredients

12 extra large jalapeños
8 slices American cheese
4 thin hot dogs, halved lengthwise
Favorite toppings such as onion, salsa, bacon, avocado, etc.

Directions

Heat grill to high. Create a hollow tube with your jalapenos by slicing off the tops and bottoms, and digging out the seeds with a paring knife. I like to cute where the jalapeno starts to narrow.

Take your halved hot dog pieces and place rectangles of cheese between them. The cheese should be the same width of your dogs.

Stuff hot dogs into jalapeño tubes. I find that 2 or 3 jalapenos should fit around each hot dogs

Grill until jalapenos are nice and charred, but be careful with how much cheese spills out!

Serve on a bun with your favorite toppings like, grilled onions, salsa, and avocado chunks!
